Born in Sydney and now based in Aotearoa, violist Tal Amoore is quickly establishing himself as one of New Zealand’s most promising violists. A recipient of the NZSM Director’s Award, he is completing his Bachelor of Music at Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music, studying with Peter Clark and Gillian Ansell of the New Zealand String Quartet. Tal has participated in the Gisborne International Music Competition, National Concerto Competition, and the National String Competition, where he was a semi-finalist in the National String Competition.
A committed chamber musician, Tal founded the Eden Quartet in 2019 and has performed as a soloist and Principal Violist with the Afflatus Ensemble in Auckland, Wellington, and Seoul, Korea. He was also selected as a Young Artist for the 2025 Whakatipu Music Festival, and as an Emerging Artist at the At the World’s Edge Festival in 2022 and 2024 culminating with an Associate Scholar of the Royal Over-Seas League Pettman Scholarship, supporting his professional development in the Northern Hemisphere.
Tal is a versatile orchestral musician, having performed extensively with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and as Guest Principal Violist with Orchestra Wellington, the Hawke’s Bay Symphony Orchestra, and the Nelson Symphony Orchestra. He has also worked with NZ Opera, Wellington Opera, and the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Tal was awarded the Robert Heuser Viola Award from the NZSO National Youth Orchestra, where he also served as Principal Violist.
Among his notable projects, In 2022 he performed Garreth Farr’s Where Will They Bury My Bones? at the At the World’s Edge Festival, alongside Sarah Watkins, Baritone Julien Van Mellaerts, and Benjamin Baker. In 2024, he performed the World premiere of Estella Wallace’s Lonely Peaks with Emerging Artists from the AWE Festival and Alexi Kenney. Some highlights for Tal have been performing under the baton of six-time Grammy Award-winning conductor Giancarlo Guerrero and regularly shares the stage with Steinway Artist Jason Bae and collaborating with London-based R&B/Jazz artist Arjuna Oakes on an album and multiple concerts.
Through outreach initiatives Tal has been involved in the At the World’s Edge Festival schools tours, performing for over 2,000 students across Aotearoa, introducing the next generation to the world of classical music. He has self-presented concerts at retirement villages across Auckland through the APO’s Young Achiever Programme and performed in the NZSO’s Tamariki Time Concert Series in six town centres across New Zealand.
